Miya came to a halt. The door looked innocent, perfectly normal, but it represented so much: her hopes, her aims, even her submission to the will of the Prophets. Although she looked calm, her heart was pounding.

One day ......

She took a deep breath, exhaled fully, then repeated the exercise to gain clarity and control. It was important to make a good first impression. Only when she was calm would she enter.

One day, I’ll be the one inside, doing these check-ins. One day!

The door to the counsellor’s office slid open and Miya stepped inside. “Cadet Ven Miya, reporting for my evaluation, sir.” She saluted smartly, then remained at attention.

The door parted to reveal a large sitting room with a very blue theme - there was a large L-shaped sectional sofa upholstered in blue on a lighter blue carpeting, against a dark blue wall. Above the couch hung a painting giving one the room a splash of color - a human couple - man in tuxedo and woman barefoot in a red evening gown - dancing on a wet beach, with a butler and maid nearby clutching umbrellas. A matching red vase sat on an end table holding white daisies.

Bending down putting away a set of bottles and paintbrushes beneath the other end table was a human woman in a standard Starfleet uniform with blue shoulder pauldrons. She turned as the doors opened, the bun atop her head wobbling slightly. “Ah, hello Miya!” She finished putting the supplies away and stood, crossing to the cadet with her hand extended. “I’m Lieutenant Commander Lofton, but you can call me Vanessa in here.”

She gestured toward the sofa. “Please have a seat. Would you like anything from the replicator? I’m getting myself a hot chocolate.”
