As the familiar dazzle of the transporter cleared, Miya sighed. Not because of her destination - being posted to the USS Challenger signified a major step along her journey with Starfleet - but because, in the scant couple of seconds while her atoms were dancing along the transporter beam, she felt somehow closer to the Prophets. The scientific part of her brain knew this was irrational but as a Bajoran, she relished the thought: obedience to the Prophets was at the core of her being.

It was why she was wearing this uniform, after all.

She stepped off the transporter platform, adjusting the strap of her bag where it lay across her chest, and saluted the transporter operator. “Cadet Ven Miya reporting, sir.” Regardless of proper protocol, she couldn’t stop the smile spreading across her face. At last, she was here!

Fortunately, the woman grinned back. “Yet another cadet! The Academy’s admin team are working overtime, I see.” She eyed the blue uniform visible beneath the young woman’s jacket. “Science or Medical?”

“Medical, sir.”

“D’you know where to find Sickbay?”

“Oh - yes, sir!” Miya sounded surprised even to be asked the question. “I’ve studied all the Challenger’s schematics. Deck four.” She gave a firm nod which made her d’ja pagh earring jingle slightly.

“On you go, then.” The woman smiled as the cheerful cadet exited, the transporter room doors sliding closed with an electronic sigh. “Cadets ....” she murmured as she turned back to her console. Who’d be the next to appear?

Miya didn’t need to consult her padd; she had mentally worked out the best route long before setting foot on the Challenger. As the doors to sickbay hissed open, she stepped inside, nostrils twitching slightly at the scents of antiseptics and anaesthetics which, for her, the environmental system could never quite mask. This time, she kept her expression neutral as she saluted. “Cadet Ven Miya, reporting for duty - and my medical evaluation too, of course.”

Cadet Ven Miya

OOC: Whoah, fantastic work on your descriptions, they are vivid and very easy to read! I’ll write our thread a bit more open-ended for you to begin with.

IC: T’Saie was slightly bemused at the new cadet, thankfully her door was open so she could see the cadet enter Sickbay and announce themselves. “Enter, Cadet!” she politely bellowed, putting her PaDD down to greet them as they entered..

(OOC: thank you! I’m looking forward to our IC chat!)

IC:
Miya turned quickly towards the person who’d called: a woman, her hair pulled back in a tight bun which accentuated the slim, pointed ears that typically indicated a member of the Vulcan species. Or a Romulan, of course. Or a … focus, Miya, focus!

Mentally, she pushed aside the knowledge from her xenobiology courses and walked towards the open door, taking a deep breath to steady herself. According to her studies of the Challenger’s schematics, the Chief Medical Officer’s office was situated at the side of the main sickbay; it seemed reasonable to assume that the woman occupying this space was her new department head. But she’d learned early on, in both her religious studies and her scientific ones, that ‘assuming’ was not the same as ‘knowing’.

She came to a halt inside the doorway and saluted again. “Cadet Ven Miya, reporting for duty, sir.”

T’Saie eyed the cadet standing in her doorway, “Take a seat,” she instructed, holding eye contact almost as if trying to read the cadet.

She picked up the PaDD again before they sat down to check the roster of new cadets, “… Cadet Ven Miya,” she began, “Can I offer you anything?” she asked, putting her ‘people skills’ to use, clearly showing that she still needed to work on it..

The woman - close to, Miya could see she wore a Lieutenant JG’s pips - seemed to take forever to look her over. Miya met her gaze steadily, reminding herself to blink (It’s not a staring contest - you don’t want her to think you’re an idiot!) but she was relieved when the lieutenant glanced down at her PaDD.

Quickly, Miya took the indicated seat, slipping her bag-strap over her head and sliding the carry-all to the floor before patting her hair to check it was still neatly in place. Her earring chimed, a soft reminder of her home planet, and she took a deep, slow breath, allowing peace to wash over her. She was here. She was following the will of the Prophets. All would be well.

The lieutenant’s slightly stilted question took Miya by surprise. Offer her anything? Like what? A particular role in sickbay? A preferred shift? Fortunately, she spotted the replicator set into the wall. “If you’re offering me refreshments, sir, I’d appreciate a glass of water. Thank you.” Though, to be honest, she’d prefer a glass of chilled kava juice. It had been too long since she’d enjoyed its refreshing taste on her last leave at home.

An eyebrow was raised at the cadets mannerisms as she made an observation that they may be nervous about joining Challenger, although not an unexpected as most cadets tend to share this particular emotion. T’Saie rose from her seat, heading towards the replicator, “Computer,” she began, “One Vulcan Mocha, sweet. One water.” she instructed.

Both in hand, she sharply turned around, “What brings you to Challenger?” she quizzed, beginning to build a profile of the Cadet as she placed both beverages on the desk before sitting down, intently listening.
