“Yes I’m the new head of Engineering. Sapeth was a great mentor but every now and again on Academy ships, department heads are reassigned after a time, giving cadets a chance to learn leadership roles and an experienced officer to the Fleet.”

Dael looked at the young cadet, remembering when he was back in her shoes. He tapped the PADD in his hand rhythmically on the desk as he continued. “But don’t worry, we’ll get you a tour sorted out after you’re done checking in, and access to the ships specs. Can’t be a good tech without those. But what I’m curious about is what brings you into Starfleet, and the field of Engineering specifically?”

The cadet thought for several moments before responding. “I scored high enough to qualify for both Science and engineering. I had intended on science but after I joined with my symbiont, I was greatly discouraged from it by the Symbiosis Commission. I enjoy taking part in Engineering though. Often the question has a yes or no answer. In science, its almost always maybe.” she responded, relieved to no longer be tied to the plant.

Dael considered her response and put down the PADD to clasp his hands in front of him. Joined Trill, that explains the thought patterns she’s been putting out he thought. Since she’d come in he’d almost registered a few “shadows” of people was the best he could describe on top of the Cadets own surface thoughts. He’d met a few Trill, but not many who were Joined.

“That is true, a lot of our job can be boiled down to ‘does it work or not’, though I do know there are times pushing the boundary of what might be seen as possible also comes with the territory.” He gave a small chuckle at that, remembering the last missions attempts to communicate with a synthetic being.
“What do you think you bring to the team here on the Challenger, that we might not have already? And if you don’t mind my asking, why were you discouraged from your first choice, had your previous host been a scientist? I have to confess I’m a little in the dark when it comes to Trill symbiotes.”

“I’m pretty excited to work with systems with much larger thresholds. As far as what I bring to the table, I bring that plant.” she said, making sure none of the vines were making a go at her again.
“But also, I’m willing to go the distance. I like to see things at there limits, and maybe a little past that. Given I haven’t been past warp 2, I’ve yet to really be adjusted to the raw scale and power of star fairing crafts. I definitely hope to have a window seat on the next warp.” She eye’d the windowless walls of the office. “For Las, my past lives… When I was in the running for parring, they told me I had already lost but that if I was willing to alter my life path with no questions asked along with a heavily edited bio of Las’s life, I would be able to pare. The only major thing of note that was left in the bio was that he had spent significant time within the Maquis. I can only assume he was in the sciences in some fashion.”
