Emmy had been staring off into what appeared to be space, but she was truly just observing the interactions between the various members of the Challenger staff. Holmman’s question brought her sharply back to what needed to be accomplished and she scowled briefly, opening and then shutting her mouth before making a rude remark. Instead, she chose to nod sharply at the XO and addressed the group of staff members who were milling around the immediate area:

“Cadet Stadi, come forward.”

Dael broke from his attempts at eating the caramel apple when he felt the Captain’s attention shift to him telepathically a moment before he heard her address him. He looked around quickly for a place to dispose of the partially chewed fruit. He had accepted that just chewing it and potentially having to make a sickbay run for his teeth was better than not taking a bite at all. Just don’t be sticky on me, not at this moment. he thought while spotting a convenient disposal bin on his way over to the Captain. It seemed just the other day he was nervous about going on the Bridge and coming up with solutions for the ship’s lead officer, and now here he was, still nervous mind you but much more sure of himself when it came to interacting with the senior staff. He had assisted in a crisis, weathered through it, and he was still here, and that’s what counted. He took the remaining steps to the Captain, straightening out his uniform, hoping none of the caramel was on his hands, and stood at attention.

As the cadet’s name was called, Sapeth took a step back and indicated for the Cadet to head towards the stage.

Kyle smiled as he watched Stadi make his way up to the podium, recalling all the time they’d had together as Cadets, You should be proud lad, he thought to himself.

Eric raised his eyebrows at the Captain’s expression. It was always good to know he could still get under the skin of his superior officers, even if he only had one superior officer on Challenger… Eric’s eyes moved to Cadet Stadi has the cadet made his way to the podium. The XO stood to the side of the stage, doing his best to support the important moment of the occasion – while eating the occasional caramel popcorn from the bag still in his hand.

T’Saie’s attention was sharply diverted away from curious foods as one of the cadets were called forward. Moving in with the crowd of staff and cadets to observe the moment she listened attentively to see which of her fellow cadets would be graduating.

Kyle took one of the small glasses of champagne from the side table of the podium and caught Stadi’s eye just long enough to raise his glass slightly with a smile.

Vanessa’s eyes widened as she heard the captain call for the engineering cadet, and she scurried up the steps to stand beside Sapeth and Anders. She sipped her - quite sugared - coffee and mentally kicked herself for not realizing what this ceremony was; she had helped with the evaluation herself. Thinking of the work he had put in she relaxed and offered him a smile as he approached.

Emmy was briefly distracted by the smallest sphere of brown on Stadi’s chin, but soon returned to the task at hand. “Cadet, your exceptional performance has led the command team to recommend you for direct promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade and assignment to the Challenger as Chief Engineer. Congratulations!” She reached to a small section of the podium to find the small box stashed there and present it to the new graduate.

The fairground erupted into applause from all of the crew, Kyle leading the applause, possibly the loudest.

One of Dael’s legs began to take an involuntary step back as the news hit him like a warp core breach. The din of applause and congratulating thoughts swarmed his mind as he attempted to gather himself from the shock. He caught what his extremities were doing and corrected them, standing at attention in front of the captain once more. Chief Engineer? Not too long ago I was nervous about even going to the bridge and helping the bridge crew in a crisis… Now I’ll be in charge? Teaching new cadets? His mind raced with these thoughts as his mouth tried to voice them before catching himself once more. Get a hold of yourself Stadi. You know Sapeth wouldn’t accept anything less than the best, Vulcan or no. And you don’t have to be Betazoid to know the Captain is the same. If they think you can do it, you can.... Just remember to breathe.

With a quick intake of breath, Dael finally responded with “Thank you Captain, I am beyond honored.” He looked over at Sapeth, Lofton, Holmann, all the senior staff assembled, giving a nod and a smile to Anders as he noted the clapping and the mental waves of congratulations emanating from him. “Thank you all for this opportunity. I look forward to proving myself worthy of your recommendation.” Look forward, that’s a word for it. Too late to run, warp speed ahead. But despite his interior thoughts, as he waited on the Captain grabbing the box and her next order, the Betazoid broke into a grin as he stood at attention, and even he couldn’t deny it was genuine.

Sapeth politely applauded along with everyone else at the announcement. Dael had proven himself over the last mission, and the promotion was well earned. And Sapeth was interested in seeing what his next assignment was going to be now.
