Starr was trying something new today for his meal. It was something that another cadet recommended, he never had Ulan Soup, and thought he would give the Vulcan dish a try tonight. It was at that point that Woolley came in with an Easel. An old form of recreational activity, one that he respected, but he wasn’t a fine artist. It wasn’t his art form. He had seen this new cadet once or twice around, and during his physical saw him working on somebody else.

Starr was having some food, and went over to the table “This seat taken?” asked a southern-british accent, almost like a British farmer’s accent, but not as extreme. Standing before him was a man just under 6 foot tall.

Seeing the Starfleet medical insignia, he said “It’s good to get to the know the Doctors on a ship, especially in my department, you never know which ones are going to be treating ya in the future, Cadet Starr, Security” he said, extending a hand as an introduction.

Max had just laid the first dabs of purple paint in what was appearing to be a nebula when Simon approached. Max smiled warmly as he gestured to the empty chair, pushing the small easel off to the side a bit as he set down the palette and brush to turn to his new shipmate.

Simon did take a glance at the painting as he approached over, and did take a quick glance out of the window as he went around the table to the seat opposite.

“Pleasure to meet you. I’m Cadet Woolley, but please, call me Max. In my line of work I find it’s good to know as many people as possible before they need our help professionally.” he said, shaking the hand that was extended to him. Max was shorter than Starr and soft spoken.

His handshake, however, was firm and his voice confident. Max was an ambivert. He enjoyed his solitude well enough but he also periodically craved social interaction. That was likely the reason he took his hobby to a public space.

Simon smiled “Well, the pleasure is mine, Max, you can call me Simon. I’ve never really been keen on all the formalities, but you know how it is. There’s structure for a reason.” he began. “And I think most people hope that they don’t need our teams help professionally, but something usually happens that requires it,” he chuckled “and they would rather deal with us than JAG or Internal Affairs any day.”

“So how do you like life aboard the Challenger so far?”

Dr. Maximilian Woolley, Medical

“Well, I haven’t been here too long” Simon answered, “but no complaints. Getting the psychological exam out of the way was an experience enough” he chuckled “but I never really was a fan of someone picking apart my brain. Don’t get me wrong, I’m OK in Sickbay.” he joked “If you’ve managed to have a chance to speak to Winters, one of the other cadets in Medical, I hope she would agree with me that I’m probably one of the more… willing security officers who will come to sickbay for what is needed, and what would help” he smiled. “In fact, she helped me with a problem I was having during my boarding physical, but I won’t bore you with the details - we’re off duty at the moment after all” he added.

“So, a bit of an artist then?” he nodded towards the easel Max was working on.

Max nodded at the mention of having one’s brain picked apart, mentally noting that he needed to make his own trip to the ship’s counselor as well.
“I’m not much a fan of having my brain picked at either, and that’s from someone whose job can be quite invasive!” he said playfully. As Starr made the comment about being an artist, he gave a momentary pause and quizzical look before connecting the dots.

“Oh!” he said, looking to the easel. “Just a little hobby of mine. My father is a biologist and my mother is an art teacher. So they ended up with a son who is a doctor and likes to dabble in paint a bit. I enjoy throwing some pottery as well but I figured that might be a bit too messy here…” he grinned.

“As for Winters, I only ever heard her name. We haven’t met. We must be on opposite shifts.”

“Fair enough,” Simon commented “and yeah, I wouldn’t appreciate getting clay all over my food” he replied jokingly. “Personally, I’m more of the sporty type, you could say. Not the football all anything like that, but more mountain sports” he commented.

“Well, it would make you the second doctor I’ve spoken too since being aboard,” as he flexed his left hand, reminding himself he’ll need to go back to sickbay at some point to get that sorted. At least he knew what it was now, and thankfully it wasn’t a major problem, he’d just have to get time to speak to his chief about it, when he got the opportunity.

“Oh, mountain sports. Sounds fun. I enjoy hiking, myself. My father used to take me out to dig for fossils in Upstate New York. Though I imagine I’ll be doing significantly less hiking in Starfleet.”

“Well, that’s what holodecks are for” Simon replied smiling “good to get a sense of home every now and again, ya know, helps when we’re out here, miles away. I did visit new york once or twice, though for the mountains I did enjoy canada too, especially during skiing season.” he added. “And at least for me I can call it ‘training’ in a way - got to keep active and ready in the security department.”

Max gestured to the soup in front of his fellow cadet. “What uhh..what is that?” He didn’t look disgusted, but merely intrigued. Though Max tried to be a well rounded person, his culinary tastes were fairly pedestrian.

“This? It’s a Vulcan dish that was recommended. Ulan soup it’s called” Simon answered. “One of the other cadets down at the academy suggested I try it out at some point, and I’ve only just gotten round to it” he replied. “It’s OK, if a bit on the… bland side, though I must admit, they suggested plomeek soup too and that just tasted like water to me” he laughed. “This one has a little more flavour to it, but you know vulcans, anything too pungent is too strong for them” he chuckled a little bit. “But it isn’t too bad” he finished, shrugging his shoulders as he took another sip of the soup. “So, why did you choose to join the fleet?” he asked casually.
