Emmy raised an eyebrow at the Chief of Security. “What guests would we have, Lieutenant? The scans were negative for life signs.” She turned to the helms officer, “try evasive pattern beta-six-upsilon. See if they follow us through that.”

“True,” Anders said pointedly, “But we don’t know that they aren’t masking their life signs somehow. If not that, the only method I can think of is some form of remote piloting.” Kyle knew that he could be overthinking, but it was the job of the Chief of Security to think of every eventuality.

The helm tapped his control and the ship lurched and changed course before settling down again.

The other ship didn’t move until the Challenger was done with her dance then the other ship completed the same routine of dips, dives, and rapid ascents as the Challenger had done. When completed, the foreign ship vented the brightly colored lights behind it like a turkey or peacock plum.

“Show offs…” Aili muttered. “They’re mirroring us captain, just with added boisterousness.”

Emmy’s eyes briefly flicked upward in what could be termed an eye roll as she observed the display on the view screen in front of her. She pivoted sharply to face the Chief of Security. “Contact Engineering and see if we are able to mimic the venting of plasma with our current systems status,” she instructed the young man. “Try hailing them again.”

After pondering for a moment, she added, “Lieutenant McMorran, do you have any further scan results that might inform us what’s going on? Any evidence of masked life signs or remote piloting?”

Even as Davis spoke, the response to her questioning began in the form of finger-tap induced beeping of the science console. “Running analytics”, the CSO added to the monotone backing-track.
