: : : Sinclair made a note of the tapping and said “Is survival the most important aspect of your life, or do you have anything that drives you? For instance, what made you join Star Fleet?” he asked.
: : :
: : : Sinclair, CNS
: :
: : “No. Friends and family are. Survival is… I can’t explain it well. It’s not as important. I hope that I have children by the time I die. I joined Star Fleet because I felt I had to. I felt that I might be needed somewhere in the galaxy. There is something pulling me here. Where I need to be. I know it sounds like I’m crazy, but it feels right.” He said as he smirked.
: :
: : Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS
:
: “I know many members of Star Fleet that joined for very similar reasons. Why do you think that sounds ‘crazy’?”
:
: Sinclair, CNS“I don’t know. If I told my family that they would call my crazy. Especially my brother. He always called me superstitious.” He chuckled. “I can’t believe I haven’t told them about Bills completely yet. They would freak out.”
Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS
“Why would they? Surely they know that Star Fleet can be dangerous…”
Sinclair, CNS
“They know that but, I would be told by them to leave Star Fleet because it’s’too dangerous’. My family is protective, Sinclair. They think that Star Fleet rarely ever does anything dangerous nowadays. Thankfully I’m the only one who likes history.”
Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS
Sinclair made another note. “How do you feel about your family not knowing the true nature of the risk you face?”
Sinclair, CNS
“I feel bad. They care about me and I lie to them. I don’t like lying. I feel guilty.”
Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS
“Casen, it would be a problem if you DIDN’T feel guilty. You have a conscience. That’s a good thing.” Sinclair said in support. “But guilt is the mind’s way of saying you may need to try something else. Have you considered talking to your family about what happened on the away team mission? And what happened to Bills? And what it is you do?”
Sinclair, CNS
“I have. I don’t know what would happen. One of my biggest fears, is not knowing about something. I’ll… I’ll tell them tomorrow. When I think of what to say. I’m not sure if you’re a good counselor or a bad one, because now you’ve persuaded me to have that drink, but you’ve made me want to drink.” He chuckled folding his arms.
Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS
Sinclair grinned. “Well, my goal is not to drive you to the bottle, lad.” and then he leaned forward. “But fear of the unknown is something that we have to deal with every day in this job. Might as well start trying to take charge of that fear now. And as far as your family goes, tell them what happened. Tell them how you feel. But make sure they know that you did a good job. So much so that you were promoted. You faced your fear with the snakes, and you came out the winner. Keep that thought with you while you talk to them. You should be proud of what you have accomplished. They should be, as well.”
Sinclair, CNS
“Joining Star Fleet was hard for me because I realized I would face the unknown. I believe the only way to stop my fear is to make the unknown,” he paused,”is to make it known. You can quote me if you need to. I would like that to be put on something with my name on it.” He walked over to the replicator and said, “Whiskey.” He got the bottle and sat down. “Anything else?”
Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS
Sinclair arched an eyebrow. “While I appreciate your comfort level, you do know this is an assessment exam, right?” he asked and cast a glance at the bottle. “Besides, the stuff that comes out of there isn’t whiskey. But maybe, once we are done, we could partake of some real stuff in the lounge.”
Sinclair, CNS
Casen laughed loudly. “Sure. I could go for real stuff. I haven’t had a good drink, or meal, for a while. Space. The only place where the food is as fake as safety.”
Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS
Sinclair nodded and then said “So tell me about your new position. Any situations that have seemed particularly challenging?”
Sinclair, CNS
