Hilo nodded in approval. “It certainly sounds like you have ample understanding of your strengths and areas for improvement. And an open mind is essential in Starfleet, so that’s good to hear. Have you met Lieutenant McMorran? Do you anticipate a personality conflict with her?” His question was posed neutrally, but his head tilted slightly to one side, as if considering what he thought the answer would be himself, now that he knew both the cadet and his department head.

Riley nodded, folding his hands before him. “I have, just to report for duty.” He paused for a moment, rolling the meeting-slash-interview over in his mind. “I don’t think there will be any conflict there,” he said slowly. “She’s very… forthright might be the best word. I am not,” he chuckled, “but that could be a good influence to have.”

Hilo’s mouth slowly spread into a playful grin. “That’s a good word to describe Lieutenant McMorran,” he agreed. “Decisiveness and self-advocacy are both skills that serve her well, and will hopefully rub off on you too.”

The counselor clapped his hands together. “Well! If you have no other questions for me, I think it’s about time we send you on your way! Wouldn’t want to keep you from fulfilling your duties.” Hilo looked at Riley questioningly, to make sure there was nothing further he wanted to discuss.

Riley chewed his lip, rocking his head from side to side. “Mmm. No, I don’t think I do,” he said after a moment. He stood and ran a hand through his blond hair. “It was a pleasure meeting you,” he said, extending his hand. “I hope you like the lilies as much as I did!”

Hilo stood and shook the cadet’s hand with a blinding smile, his cheerful demeanor returning to full effect now that the formalities were done with. “It was a pleasure to meet you too Mr. Riley, and I will be sure to keep you updated about how they’re doing!” He paused and looked up in thought. “In fact, depending on their bloom cycle I might be able to get you a blossom before your graduation…” He shook his head to dismiss the thought. “We’ll see. Alright, now off you go!” He made a mock shooing motion. “Go be the starfleet officer you are meant to be!”
