Kyle’s grin grew wider as he raised his hands in a mock defensive gesture, “All I meant was, well, let’s just say I like to wind down with a drink myself after a long shift every so often. In terms of the second question, well, like I said, eventually I want to move from Security to Command, I want to make as many positive memories as possible. Rising through the ranks comes with that, the way I’ve planned it in my head means I serve as CSO on a ship for a few years before eventually making XO, either on the ship I served as CSO on or another, then even further down the line, make Captain, maybe think about starting a family. Here’s hoping at least.” Anders glanced about briefly to see if their were any good looking cadets hidden away.

Riley sat back in his chair, lips pressed to a thin line, staring at the ceiling. “Hmm. ‘Captain Anders.’ Does have a nice ring to it,” he grinned.

He watched Kyle’s eyes scan the room and raised an eyebrow. “Checking for threats?” he asked the security cadet, looking about himself. “Or were you expecting someone else?”

“Let’s just say lad, you never know if any lovely lady cadets might need a hand with an assignment.” He winked.

Matthew shook his head. “Save the wink for them,” he chuckled.

He took the time to look around again. He could admit that he had seen several women on board he would classify as attractive; but as he’d told Kyle before, he didn’t feel now was the right time for romantic or physical entanglements. Making a good impression was more important. Graduating was more important. There would be time for that later.

But not right away on his first assignment. He had to make a good first impression there, too. Maybe after six months or so.

Or maybe a year…

Riley shook himself from his reverie. “So what kinds of things does the COS have your division doing?” He immediately thought of the investigation and added “I don’t mean any case specifics, I mean like busy work. We’re told we should be performing our own research and experiments, for example.”
