Kyle chuckled mischieviously, “Trust me lad, after a few weeks in Starfleet, all that starts to change.”

Riley’s glass paused just short of his mouth. “What changes?” he asked, smirking. “The desire to be a captain? No, definitely will not.” He sniffed the deep-amber liquid. “And I sincerely hope that Starfleet won’t drive me to drink all that frequently!” He laughed and sipped the drink, feeling the mellow burn spread through his chest.
“Ooh, this is good synthehol,” he said, then looked to the bar. “Unless they have an actual bottle of it back there.” He swirled the liquid, staring at the scattered hues it gave off. “Do you know why Centaurian brandy tastes so different from Earth brandy?” he asked, but didn’t wait for an answer. “They like to talk about the barrels of the local trees-” He took a sip of the brandy. “-but it’s the unique copper alloy they use. It reacts differently to the alcohol and sediments.” He laughed. “We - some friends and I at UAC - spent weeks trying to figure out what the precise alloy is, they keep it this huge secret.” He shook his head at the memory. “We never could figure it out. But we were all physicists, and we never bothered to ask any of the chemistry students. Ah, well.”
He lifted the snifter. “To better living through science,” he toasted, then chuckled. “Sorry, I can get carried away sometimes.”

Throughout the entirety of Matthew’s speech, if you could call it that, Kyle had been giggling like a small child. He rose his own glass and said: “To finding new friends.” Anders passed the two glasses to a server, “Better not push it too much eh lad?”

Matthew cocked his head, brows furrowed, looking at Kyle. The confusion was evident on his face, then he barked a laugh, covering his mouth a moment too late. “No. Oh, no,” he said finally, still laughing. “I’m actually less chatty when I’m drunk,” he explained. “I can just be a motormouth at times.” He giggled, and shrugged.
“It can be because I’m nervous, or excited.” He paused, head cocked again, brown eyes roving, considering. “I think it was the excellent brandy,” he concluded, nodding. “That must be a bottle of the real stuff. I wonder what vineyard and distillery?” He shook his head.
“So where do you see your self after the Academy?” he asked, then pointed his finger at Kyle. “No, wait, you never answered which you meant would change!” He grinned at the security cadet. “That first, and then the second question.”
