Kyle hoped he didn’t seem too big headed with that remark, “So, Captain of a Research Vessel maybe?” He took one final swig of the root beer before passing it to one of the servers walking around the tables.

Riley choked. “No,” he replied, “not at all.” He shook his head. “I have no interest in being a captain,” he grimaced. “Why does everyone keep asking me that?”
Matthew flagged down the server before he got too far away and ordered a Centaurian brandy. “Today needs a drink,” he said to Kyle. “And I don’t even like to drink.”

Kyle chuckled mischieviously, “Trust me lad, after a few weeks in Starfleet, all that starts to change.”

Riley’s glass paused just short of his mouth. “What changes?” he asked, smirking. “The desire to be a captain? No, definitely will not.” He sniffed the deep-amber liquid. “And I sincerely hope that Starfleet won’t drive me to drink all that frequently!” He laughed and sipped the drink, feeling the mellow burn spread through his chest.
“Ooh, this is good synthehol,” he said, then looked to the bar. “Unless they have an actual bottle of it back there.” He swirled the liquid, staring at the scattered hues it gave off. “Do you know why Centaurian brandy tastes so different from Earth brandy?” he asked, but didn’t wait for an answer. “They like to talk about the barrels of the local trees-” He took a sip of the brandy. “-but it’s the unique copper alloy they use. It reacts differently to the alcohol and sediments.” He laughed. “We - some friends and I at UAC - spent weeks trying to figure out what the precise alloy is, they keep it this huge secret.” He shook his head at the memory. “We never could figure it out. But we were all physicists, and we never bothered to ask any of the chemistry students. Ah, well.”
He lifted the snifter. “To better living through science,” he toasted, then chuckled. “Sorry, I can get carried away sometimes.”
